Basketball Play - Cleveland Cavaliers - Point Flares (vs switching)

Cleveland Cavaliers - Point Flares (vs switching)

Doug Brotherton 05/22/2018

In Games 1 and 2 of the 2018 Eastern Conference Finals, the Boston Celtics got a lot of credit for their smooth switches defensively. In games 3 and 4, the Cleveland Cavaliers countered with some basic actions to pick on the switching defense. Their most effective action was their "Point Flares," with LeBron James as the passer from the middle of the floor. The corner to wing flare allows the screener to seal and cut to the rim, for a pass over the top. This set gave the Celtics fits, resulting in multiple layups for Cleveland. Michigan Wolverines- 42 Clear

Doug Brotherton 03/16/2018

Michigan ran this set, to counter Montana's aggressive traps in the Wolverine's ball screens. This set clears the space behind the ball screen, allowing the screener to pop. Michigan ran this for their best shooter. At the end of the set, the screener can shoot the 3, or make the extra pass for a better shot. Basketball Play - Loyola Chicago - Punch Hammer

Loyola Chicago - Punch Hammer

Doug Brotherton 03/15/2018

Loyola Chicago ran the best set play of the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. This "Punch Hammer" set resulted in a wide open 3, to tie the game, late in the second half. The post entry sucks in the help defense, before the baseline skip pass (HAMMER ACTION) led to the important 3pt shot. The Ramblers of Loyola Chicago went on to upset Miami, on a buzzer beater, and beat Nevada and Kansas State en route to the Final Four.
