Basketball Play - Texas ATO Swing

Texas ATO Swing

Wes Kosel 03/19/2015

Texas used this play after a time-out in the first half. I'm always a fan of having multiple scoring options in a play, and Rick Barnes does a great job giving his team several looks at good shots in this one. The play starts with a ball reversal (1 swinging the ball to to 4 to 3). The play gets open looks off of a down screen, back-screen, and ball-screen. Texas should come back to this play and look for the lob on the back-screen with their long wings. See More

Basketball Play - Butler Horns Flex Action

Butler Horns Flex Action

Wes Kosel 03/19/2015

Butler used this play in the first half of the game against Texas to get an open shot in the post. The play starts in the horns set with an entry pass to the elbow. Butler fakes the staggered screen in the corner and has 2 back-cut to the basket. If 2 isn't open on the cut, he continues across the lane to set a flex screen for 3. Butler got a good look here and threw it directly in to 3 in the post. If 3 isn't open, 1 can pass to 2 cutting off of the down screen from 5. See More

Basketball Play - Cyclone Drag Flare

Cyclone Drag Flare

Wes Kosel 03/19/2015

This counter to the drag play was used early in the second half. Niang moves over to set a drag screen for 1 dribbling up the right side of the floor. 2 clears out to the opposite corner to create space for Niang to cut to on a flare screen. As 1 dribbles middle, 5 sets a flare screen for Niang. 1 passes to Niang for a 3-point shot. See More

Basketball Play - Cyclone Drag

Cyclone Drag

Wes Kosel 03/19/2015

In this early offense play from ISU, the Cylones set a drag screen with Niang at the right lane line. The point guard dribbles to the middle off of the ball-screen as Niang rolls to the basket and the 5 man completes a "short roll" to the opposite block. Hoiberg likes to utilize this short roll instead of a roll/replace action to put both of his post players near the basket for a dump down pass. If 1 doesn't have a shot, he looks to pass off to 4, 5, or hit 3 in the corner for a 3-point shot. See More

Basketball Play - UAB Blazer Box

UAB Blazer Box

Wes Kosel 03/19/2015

At the 5:40 mark in the first half, UAB ran this box set play. The Blazers were very patient and worked through multiple options before getting an open shot on the dribble hand-off at the end of the play. UAB missed the shot but got an offensive rebound. Slowing the game down and working through offensive options looks to be a good strategy for Coach Haase. This slows down Iowa State and can get the Cyclones into foul trouble if they are lazy on defense. See More

Basketball Play - UAB Option Double

UAB Option Double

Wes Kosel 03/19/2015

In this play by UAB, the Blazers send the 3 down underneath the basket where he then has the option to cut off of a staggered screen or single screen. Early in the game, UAB has been utilizing the single option. Once 3 gets to the wing, 1 and 2 clear out to the perimeter and 4 and 5 move up to set a staggered ball-screen for 3. The play has been blown up by Iowa State so they haven't gotten all the way through to the ball-screen, but it is a solid action that will force the Cyclones to defend UAB's quick guards. See More

Basketball Play - Flyer Drag

Flyer Drag

Wes Kosel 03/19/2015

Here is a play from Wednesday night's game between Dayton and Boise State. Very similar to his brother at Arizona, Archie Miller runs great combinations of actions to get open shots for his best players. In this play, the Flyers spread out along the perimeter and the point guard brings the ball up the right side of the floor. 5, who is trailing the play, moves in to set a drag screen for 1. The initial pick and roll is set to get a good look at Kendall Pollard inside (with the rest of the team on the 3-point line). If Pollard isn't open inside, he clears to the corner as a flare screen is set for the point guard (or best shooter). I saw Jordan Sibert and Scoochie Smith come off of this flare screen in the game. Basketball Play - Robert Morris Pin Stagger

Robert Morris Pin Stagger

Wes Kosel 03/18/2015

NCAA Tournament First Four: Here is a play from the first half of Robert Morris vs. North Florida. Robert Morris got off to a hot start early in the game running a variety of actions to score. In this play, Robert Morris was looking for a 3-point shot. The play starts with 4 running down the lane lane to screen for 3 at the block. 3 cuts out to the wing to get the ball from 1. If 3 has a 3-point shot here he will take it. If 3 doesn't have a shot, the next 3-point shot option is 2 cutting off of a staggered screen. Lastly, the 3rd look at a 3-point shot is 1 curling around 5 at the top of the key. See More

Basketball Play - Hampton BLOB Circle Down

Hampton BLOB Circle Down

Wes Kosel 03/18/2015

Coach Joyner used this play against Manhattan on Tuesday night. Since the Jaspers pressed and zoned so much, it was rare that we got to see some man actions from the Pirates. Also, it was rare to see offense ran past the initial actions by either team due to the fast paced nature of both teams. On some dead ball situations and out-of-bounds plays, Manhattan matched up man to man. In this baseline out-of-bounds play, Hampton uses a misdirection by the 4 man to leave the ball-side corner open for 3 to cut to. If open, 3 will take the shot in the corner. If he isn't open, 3 dribbles towards the middle of the floor as 4 starts his sequence of down screens. The first down screen is set for 1 on the opposite wing. Again, 1 will take the shot if open off of the screen. If 1 isn't open, he looks to pass to 2 cutting off of the second down screen from 4. See More

Basketball Play - Ole Miss Horns PNR

Ole Miss Horns PNR

Wes Kosel 03/18/2015

NCAA Tournament First Four: Here is a play from Tuesday night's game between BYU and Ole Miss. The Rebels did a good job of getting into the paint and shooting the open shot or passing off to the open post players cutting to the basket. In this play, Ole Miss sets up in a horns set and the point guard takes the ball to the right off of the screen from 4. The point guard looks first to turn the corner and score or create a mid-range shot. If nothing is open, he has 4 rolling to the basket and 5 popping out. If 1 passes to 5, 5 passes to 3 on the wing and follows his pass directly into a wing pick & roll. The Rebels had great success with actions like this getting into the paint with their quick guards. If 3 doesn't have a shot, he looks to draw the defenders into help so that he can pass off to one of the post player for an easy dunk. See More

Basketball Play - Manhattan Jaspers 1-4 High Options

Manhattan Jaspers 1-4 High Options

Wes Kosel 03/18/2015

Although Manhattan is already out, head coach Steve Masiello had the Jaspers running some quality actions. In these 1-4 High Options, both plays start with the same guard loop action. If your team has good stretch forwards, these plays will get your 4 and 5 the ball at the elbow or perimeter in position to shoot or pass to the open shooter. Option 1: If the back-screen isn't open (3 cutting off of a screen from 4), 5 passes to 1 on the wing. 3 then cuts through the elevator screen from 4 and 5 for a shot. Option 2: In the second option, 5 passes to 4 instead of 1 flaring to the wing. Once 4 has the ball, the Jaspers run a flex action with 3 screening for 2 and 5 screening down for 3. See More

Basketball Play - Wofford Terriers Zipper Post Options

Wofford Terriers Zipper Post Options

Wes Kosel 03/17/2015

Here are two plays from Wofford Terriers head coach Mike Young. The Terriers are back in the NCAA Tournament for the 2nd straight year and for the 4th time in the past 6 seasons. In these plays, the Terriers use the point guard to set a down screen for 5. 5 makes the zipper cut up the lane line looking for the ball at the elbow or slightly extended. The small on big down screen makes it hard for the defense to defend the zipper cut into the hand-off actions. If the defense switches, the post defender is now guarding a smaller player on a hand-off (when he is used to guarding the post player). Zipper Post #1: In the first option, 2 passes to 5 at the elbow and 1 loops around 5 looking for a hand-off. If 1 cannot turn the corner, he has 4 coming off of a down screen on the weak side or 2 slipping to the basket. Zipper Post #2:In the second option, it starts just like the first play with 1 setting the screen for 5 and 5 cutting up to get the ball at the elbow. Instead of 1 cutting around 5 for hand-off. This time 3 moves in from the wing to loop around 5. Once 3 has the ball, he has the same scoring and passing options as 1 did in the first play. See More

Basketball Play - Houston Rockets Short Corner Post ISO

Houston Rockets Short Corner Post ISO

Wes Kosel 03/17/2015

Here is a play from the Houston Rockets that they use to get an open look in the post or short corner. The play starts with players 1-3 on the perimeter and 4 at the top of the key. 4 moves towards 1 to set a ball-screen. The purpose of the ball-screen in this play is to force 5's defender (X5) into help position on penetration. Once the point guard reads that X5 is helping over, he can pitch the ball out to 2 on the wing and 2 looks inside to 5 posting up. Once 5 has the ball, he has a choice to take his man middle or drive baseline. With either option, the rest of the players on the floor know exactly where to cut depending on which direction 5 drives. See More

Basketball Play - Iso Options

Iso Options

Wes Kosel 03/16/2015

Here are two isolation options for when you need 2 points at the end of a game or if you have a dominant player that you want to get into isolation. These plays come from Coastal Carolina head coach Cliff Ellis. Ellis has won over 600 games in his career and has been at several programs in the southeast. This year, his Chanticleers are 24-9 and will face up against #1 seed Wisconsin in Omaha on Friday. In the first option, Ellis gets his 2-guard open with a down screen and a dribble across the floor by his point guard. The goal is to get his guard the ball around the free-throw line or elbow. Once 2 has the ball, he faces up and lets 5 clear out to the corner. 2 looks to drive to the basket. In the second option, Ellis gets his 4 man the ball with a simple down screen out of the horns set. The point guard dribbles over towards the right wing and passes to 4. Once 4 has the ball around the top of the key, 5 clears out and lets 4 take his man 1 on 1 to the basket. This play works well if you have a slower defender on either player. In addition, if the other defenders help on the penetration, you will have a good luck at a kick-out for a 3-point shot. See More
