Basketball Play - Boston Celtics "AI Attack"

Boston Celtics "AI Attack"

Gibson Pyper 02/26/2016

Designed to again get the player attacking to their strong hand, this set off the "AI-Iverson Cut" has options for players to attack off of. The first option is for the player to score and attack the rim, the second is if the defense collapses then look to kick to the big cutting off the hammer screen and finally a throwback set to get misdirection into a guard coming off a throwback screen. For the throwback screen it is important if the team "ICES" the ballscreen and you have already attacked the rim off the Iverson cut, then this will open up this counter even more, making it look like you are attacking and then throw it back for an open look. Basketball Play - Boston Celtics "Punch Rip Turn"

Boston Celtics "Punch Rip Turn"

Gibson Pyper 02/26/2016

When the Celtics need a quick score for 2 they run backscreen out of a post up from a guard. Since the Celtics have versatility Stevens typically runs Evan Turner off a screen into the post, and the big then sets a backscreen for a guard at the top of the key. This option will not be there every time, so the big then continues and turns to set a pindown screen for the guard in the corner to look to get a jump shot off a curl cut. If all of these options are covered, he lets the player in the post go 1 on 1 and try to get a score. See More

Basketball Play - Boston Celtics "Winner"

Boston Celtics "Winner"

Gibson Pyper 02/26/2016

This is my favorite Brad Stevens set that he runs at the end of games when his team needs a 3 point shot and it almost always results in an open look for Avery Bradley. Beginning with the player you want to receive the flare screen, he zipper cuts to the top of the key as a decoy. After the zipper cut, a guard on the weakside block sets a backscreen for a big (3-4 man) to cut toward the rim on the opposite side of the key and receive a pass. After the big catches the pass, the other big man sets a flare screen for the initial guard to get an open look from 3. See More

Basketball Play - South Carolina - Zone Lob

South Carolina - Zone Lob

Lucas Shapiro 02/23/2016

This play came out of a timeout from South Carolina and shifted the momentum of the game. The key in this set is the ball reversals that make the defense ignore the weak side short corner. One of the most important concepts of attacking a zone defense is ball movement and attacking the gaps, but I’m a firm believer that screening a zone is even more dangerous. See More

Basketball Play - Baylor Lob vs 2-3 Zone

Baylor Lob vs 2-3 Zone

Dana Beszczynski 02/18/2016

Scott Drew has Baylor in the hunt for a NCAA Tournament bid and possible high seed. This years Baylor Bears are currently 19-7 overall and 8-5 in Conference. This play is from their win against Iowa State. It was run after a FT situation for the Cyclones who dropped back in a 2-3 Zone. The backline of the Zone set-up rather high as Baylor did a good job with spacing coming out of Transition. Wainright cuts through the zone off the Fast Break and immediately screens the outside defender (Burton) of the Zone as Motley moves to screen the middle defender (Niang) as Prince makes his way from the ring towards the ring and throws down the jam off the pass from Medford. An exciting end of season play to spice up your Zone Playbook!! See More

Basketball Play - Washington Wizards "Slice Stagger Spain"

Washington Wizards "Slice Stagger Spain"

Gibson Pyper 02/12/2016

One of my favorite actions is "Spain" action, which is my term for a backscreen for the player who just set a ballscreen. Randy Wittman has run about 6 different variations out of this concept, but we will look at the main one I think alot of teams could employ. Nearly every college team runs "Slice Stagger" action into a high ballscreen, and to add this wrinkle would be very effective as it has been for the Wizards this year. See More

Basketball Play - Dallas Mavericks "Flip Baseline Exit"

Dallas Mavericks "Flip Baseline Exit"

Gibson Pyper 02/12/2016

Dallas runs a great set for some of their stretch 4's and Chandler Parsons when they go small out of flip action. Flip action is the action in which a player receives the pass and then flips it right back to the player who passes it to him. After this initial action, the player who flipped it back receives a backscreen to the rim which is just decoy action. The big who sets the backscreen then receives the pass and hands it off to a guard on the wing cutting. The big then screens down for the stretch 4 who is under the rim to receive an open look coming off the baseline down screen. See More

Basketball Play - Tennessee - Fake Release BLOB

Tennessee - Fake Release BLOB

Lucas Shapiro 02/09/2016

If the inbounder is the most forgettable player on these types of plays, then the release option is the second most forgettable. This was an impressive set for Rick Barnes to draw up after a timeout. They a screen-the-screener play and then had all of the players space out around the perimeter. This allowed the release option to cut to the hoop for the open dunk. This play helped Tennessee separate themselves for the upset. See More
