Basketball Play - IOWA STATE 2-3 ZONE BLOB

IOWA STATE 2-3 ZONE BLOB

Jens Hakanowitz 01/25/2015

The Cyclones run this BLOB play vs 2-3 zone defenses. A typical overload play to get the ball inside. As you can see in frame 2, X5 is forced to step up to the high post to guard the ball. X4 is left on his own guarding two players (5 & 2) at the same time. One of them will be open to recieve a pass. See More

Basketball Play - DAVIDSON 1-4

DAVIDSON 1-4

Jens Hakanowitz 01/24/2015

The Davidson Wildcats use this BLOB play against 2-3 zone defenses. The entire outcome is based on a misdirection action. The two bigs set screens to get the shooter (inbounder) open. Then the action on the other side of the court occurs. A ball screen and baseline screen to either get a shot from the short corner or a seal inside. See More

Basketball Play - Depaul Horns Action

Depaul Horns Action

Kevin Bruinsma 01/22/2015

Trailing by 2 with 20 seconds left and facing a UIC 2-3 zone defense Depaul went to a horns action against the zone. They made it difficult for UIC’s zone to determine when to bump and when to stay defending the ball and it ultimately led to an open game winning 3. Keep in mind Depaul didn't hit the shot off the initial action, but the action broke UIC down and led to the wide open 3 pointer. See More

This is a great quick hitter that puts a 2-3 zone in a few tough situations. This play works best if 4 is a threat to shoot the 3 at the top of the key. Once 1 initiates the play and swings the ball, quick ball movement and spacing put x4 in a spot where they have to figure out to whom they want to give the wide open 3. See More

Basketball Play - 4 High Zone

4 High Zone

Justin Scanson 01/22/2015

This is a fantastic zone offense that can be run at all levels. It is the perfect "First Zone Offense" to be taught at the middle school or sub varsity level with easy setup and rules. There is also enough options that more advanced levels of basketball would see success with this offense. Options/Variations From 1-4 set, high post entry. Look for the post that did not receive the entry to dive to the basket. This is hard to guard at all levels. From the wing with posts at short corner/high post, high post entry. Look for the post at the short corner to cut across the lane to the opposite block. From the wing with posts at short corner/high post, skip pass. Posts can X cut or straight cut. See More

Basketball Play - Tug

Tug

Justin Scanson 01/22/2015

We ran this play years ago when I was an assistant coach at Sentinel High School in Missoula Montana. This works great vs 2-3 zone. Key Point 1 - Swing the ball around the perimeter to shift the zone Key Point 2 - Timing is key, 3 should be coming off the back screen as 1 comes off ball screen. 1 dribble and throw it up See More

Basketball Play - Side Ball Screen Vs. 2-3

Side Ball Screen Vs. 2-3

Kevin Bruinsma 01/22/2015

Tied 63-63 against UMKC we turned to the side ball screen action against their match-up 2-3 zone they played for nearly 40 minutes. The key was a great screen by #4 Amiker, which eliminated the ball defender. The weakside guard of their zone had to stop our ball handler, #11 Cole in a tie game, who then kicked it to our shooter, #10 Keene on the left wing. The bottom man of the zone didn't want to leave another shooter, #1 Plummer in the corner of the floor so the top defender tried to stop ball and then recover to contest the shot. See More

Basketball Play - Double High vs. 2-3 Zone

Double High vs. 2-3 Zone

Kevin Noon 12/31/2014

This play can be used a quick hitter against the zone, in transtion or as a primary entry to a 4-out/1-in zone offense. It is great to get the ball in the lane and collapse the defense. The main job of the two big men is to set a solid screen, especially the second screener. The main role of the driving guard is to draw the help defense. 1 picks a side of the court to take the ball. 4 & 5 screen the two top guards. As 1 comes off screen, he hits 2. 2 catches the ball, rips and drives looking to draw x4 and have x5 step up. 4 pops and spaces, 5 rolls looking to draw x2 and x5. If 2 draws x4 then 3 will be open in the corner. If 2 draws x5 then 5 will be open for the dump off. If 2 draws x4 and x5 and then x3 will be forced to cover 5, then 4 will be open for the skip. Tug Motion

Justin Scanson 12/31/2014

The key to this zone offense is to get your baseline runner to buy in to the idea of crossing the lane on high post entry. I hope you like it and I hope that teams don't immediately change to man defense when you start getting layups! See More
