Basketball Play - Chicago Bulls - EOG Post Kickout 3

Chicago Bulls - EOG Post Kickout 3

Matt Wheeler 07/20/2016

Down 3 with 3.6 seconds left in the NBA Summer League championship game, the Chicago Bulls ran this sideline out of bounds play to get Denzel Valentine a clean look at a 3. This play uses the skip pass action that Brad Stevens has used at both Butler and the Boston Celtics in end game situations. The Bulls ran their own variation of the play that started with a decoy cross screen for Valentine instead of the zipper screen that Stevens uses. This action caused the defense to relax, thinking Valentine was covered after defending the initial cross screen successfully. The rescreen for Valentine then freed him up for the game tying shot. Fred Hoiberg ran this re-screen action for a three pointer late in the Bulls-Hawks game on March 28th. It's a play with a re-screen (or go-ricky) above the level of the ball, a difficult action to defend for a shooter. It's a wrinkle off an old Brad Stevens inbound play. See More

Houston ran this play against the Clippers on 3-22-16 with 28 seconds left in the game. After the 2 circles under the basket and 1 clears to the near corner, the 5 sprints at the 3 as if he is setting a backscreen. This is fake action, though, as the 5 stops short and pivots into a downscreen for the 2 in the corner. The 3 is on his own to get open coming towards the ball, and in this case James Harden is able to break free from Russell Westbrook. He catches the ball with a head of steam and is immediately a threat to attack the basket. Meanwhile the 2 comes off of the downscreen, and Harden is able to throw a left hand hook pass to Jason Terry for the 3. See More
