"Box Special" is a lob set, which we ran regularly at Mid Michigan Community College. If the lob is not available, the back screener out cuts. There is the potential for a shot, or a high/low pass. If X4 helps, then the point guard will be open on the baseline screen. The multiple options to this set made it a great set to run early in games. See More

This is a wrinkle out of an Elbow action that the Phoenix Suns used to run during the Seven Seconds or Less era. As 5 rolls to the basket, 4 sets a down screen for 2 (Klay Thompson) making it hard for the help defense to tag the roll as X2 and X4 are occupied with the downscreen action on the weakside. 4 can look to slip to the basket or lift high as X4 has rim protection duties. The Boston Celtics ran this ATO action against the Washington Wizards in Game 7 of the second round of the 2017 NBA playoffs. In the 4th quarter of Game 7, in the 2017 NBA Playoffs, the Celtics were trying to find an answer to the Wizards 7-0 run. Brad Stevens ran this ATO, which resulted in an easy Marcus Smart lay-up. The play uses some misdirection, to get an easy post entry. With Celtics' star Isaiah Thomas cutting to the wing, and a cross screen happening, it looks like the ball will work back to that side of the floor. Instead, Olynyk dribbled the opposite direction, and Horford screened X3. When X4 fought over the screen, Smart (3) simply slips to the ball. This was one of the best ATO designs of the 2017 NBA Playoffs. The Celtics weathered that Wizards run, winning Game 7, to advance to the Eastern Conference Finals. See More

"Iverson Flop High Low" is a nice counter to the Iverson series. The Iverson cut is used to draw the help away from the baseline. The point guard dribbles opposite of the cut. The 4 pops, after setting the screen, and receives a pass from the point guard. The 5 ducks in, for a high/low pass. See More

"Iverson Loop" is a misdirection set that can be used to get a shooter an open look, or isolate a skilled player. The Iverson cut clears out the weak side. When the flare screen is set, the passer must decide if he throws the skip pass to 4, or looks at the 5 on the slip to the rim. If the ball is skipped to 4, it is for a shot, or a wing isolation is created for the player to attack. See More

In a pivotal Game 6 of the 2017 NBA Playoffs, the Celtics were struggling offensively. Brad Stevens is excellent at designing multiple set sequences, to help his team find a rhythm. In the 2nd quarter, the Celtics ran this sequence, scoring on two of the three possessions. The only possession that they did not score was an open 3, which rimmed out. It was a terrific sequence, which kept the defense off balance. See More
