Basketball Play - David Blatt Horns 1 Set Play

David Blatt Horns 1 Set Play

Scott Peterman 02/19/2015

David Blatt been around the Israeli and Euroleague basketball circuit. Including coaching for Maccabi Tel Aviv (they de bezt, alweyz de bezt) and the Russian National Team (Kirilenko, Mozgov, Shved). He coached Anthony Parker back into the NBA. Names don't exactly get the point across, but let it be known, that he has coached winning teams, almost exclusively. And thats the point of the game. From what I can gather Blatt's teams run a lot through a horns offense. Which, if you don't know, puts two guys- one on either- high post (witch's nipple), two guys in opposite corner/wings and starts with the ball handler at the top of the key. It is not a triangle offense, but it does revolve around cerebral players creating space with passing, smart cutting and good footwork. Certainly a proprietor of the Triangle has respect for this, a verySpurs-y set of offensive goals. Everybody needs touches to make this kitten purr. Everyone needs to fill the open spaces that relate to their skill set, and everyone must become a threat when they have the ball. Basketball Play - UIC Horns Screen-Screener

UIC Horns Screen-Screener

Kevin Bruinsma 02/11/2015

With Horns being such a popular set at all levels I thought I’d take a look at another action that UIC ran in their game at Milwaukee. They dribbled the point guard over to the wing and had him dribble off both 4 & 5 ball screens. Milwaukee tried to defend this in multiple ways which you will see in the video below. They tried to hedge it with the 5 man, and then they attempted to switch it. I thought this action was great to get your point guard off two ball screens, then get your 2 man coming off a screen the screener for a shot. See More

Basketball Play - Horns Loop

Horns Loop

Kyle Gilreath 02/09/2015

Saturday night in their ESPN College Gameday game in Gainesville vs Florida, the Kentucky Wildcats run this quick double-backscreen play to start the 2nd half. What made this play so effective was the timing by 3 who hesitated at the top of the key before 5 caught the ball. See More

Basketball Play - YSU Horns Options

YSU Horns Options

Kevin Bruinsma 02/03/2015

When playing Cleveland State you have to find ways to counter their pressue and make it as difficult as possible for them to successfully trap you. They trap all ball screens so running a horns set is one of the most difficult ways for them to do that successfully. Trailing at the half at our place we started the second half running three different variations of horns on our first three possessions. We scored on all 3. With them trapping the ball screen it makes it crucial the opposite post defender sinks in the hole or there is a strong blitz from the corner/wing defender. You can see in the first clip how even though our PG #11 DJ Cole got trapped as soon as he got the ball to our 4 man #4 Shawn Amiker he had a clear driving lane to the basket. The second clip shows us going off the 4 man, their 5 didn't sink far enough and we got an And 1. The third & final clip shows a pass entry that brought us to a back screen and down screen action on the side of the floor. With them pressuring the ball our 5 man #20 Bobby Hain created space off the bounce and hit the slipping 4 man for a lay-up. See More

Basketball Play - Green Bay Horns Big

Green Bay Horns Big

Kevin Bruinsma 01/24/2015

Green Bay needed a score in a huge Horizon League contest down 1 against Valpo. They used pre-season POY #24 Keifer Sykes as a decoy to free up their second best player in Greg Mays. Ball was entered to Mays who received a 5 man ball screen so he could drive it hard to his right hand. With him putting so much pressure on the defense with the drive, it allowed the 5 man great rebounding position if he would have missed the shot. See More

Basketball Play - Depaul Horns Action

Depaul Horns Action

Kevin Bruinsma 01/22/2015

Trailing by 2 with 20 seconds left and facing a UIC 2-3 zone defense Depaul went to a horns action against the zone. They made it difficult for UIC’s zone to determine when to bump and when to stay defending the ball and it ultimately led to an open game winning 3. Keep in mind Depaul didn't hit the shot off the initial action, but the action broke UIC down and led to the wide open 3 pointer. See More

Basketball Play - Horns post flare

Horns post flare

null null 01/16/2015

This is a set that gets a flare screen for a post player. A nice play to run in transition or at the end of the games if you need a quick score. The play starts with a dribble handoff and ballscreen. The play ends with a flare for your shooter. See More

Basketball Play - Horns Twist Double

Horns Twist Double

Kyle Gilreath 01/08/2015

The Florida Gators ran this Horns action in their Southeastern Conference opening win vs South Carolina. I have seen this play run recently but what I liked about this action was how 4 cleaned up the action at the end with the staggered pick & roll. Spacing 2 and 3 in the corners allows for an open/spaced floor for 5 to sprint to the rim while 1 tries to create. See More

Basketball Play - Suns Horns Stagger

Suns Horns Stagger

Horns formation. Dragic (1) hits Morris (4) at the elbow and cuts opposite. While Dragic (1) and Plumlee (5) set the stagger away, Morris (4) engages in a dribble handoff with Green (3). As Green (3) rises on the wing with the ball, Bledsoe (2) comes off the stagger and gets the pass. See More
