Basketball Play - Zipper Quick

Zipper Quick

Kyle Gilreath 05/12/2014

In their Game 4 loss in the 204 EC Semi-Finals, the Washington Wizards ran this ATO action late in the 4th quarter in attempt to tie the game. This simple action is extremely effective because it gives your team multiple scoring options to counter any defensive counters. See More

Basketball Play - Double Curl Special

Double Curl Special

Randy Brown 04/22/2014

Guarding the curl is a difficult defensive assignment. This play incorporates two curls for scoring easy baskets. Play starts with back screen for 4, followed by cross screen for 3 curling to the goal. The second curl is set up with ball reversal to 5 and a down screen by 4 to free 2 in the lane. See More

Basketball Play - BYU Cougars Post 5

BYU Cougars Post 5

Dana Beszczynski 02/11/2014

Dave Rose is one of the most respected Coach's in Division I today and has made BYU a yearly threat to reach the NCAA Tournament. This play was run effectively at the start of the game as they get their 5 man Mika touches inside. What makes this play so effective is the cut by Haws as if he curls over the top of the 5 man, x5 is forced to step off and help as there is no weak side defensive help on the open side. The Cougars are also such a deadly outside shooting team with Haws who is the leading scorer in the WCC and 3rd in the nation. See More

Basketball Play - Zipper Again

Zipper Again

Daniel Murphy 01/17/2014

Play run by Michigan State in their OT thriller vs. Ohio State. This can also be run as a SOB. The more I look at screening and cutting offensively, the more I realize the importance of setting up screens and cuts, and reading screens and cuts. Defensively, sound principles of fighting through screens, stunting to the ball on pindowns, maintaining vision of ball and man and foot faking and recovering in disadvantage situations can not be overemphasized. Basketball Play - Motion Back Again

Motion Back Again

Kyle Gilreath 12/11/2013

Last night in their win over the Kansas Jayhawks, the Florida Gators ran this half-court set which involved multiple screening actions leading to a middle pick & roll. As 1 came off the pick & roll he was able to find 3 spotting up in the corner. Due to the defensive rotations, this allowed 5 to post-up on the block. See More

Basketball Play - "Rhody"

"Rhody"

Kyle Gilreath 12/06/2013

Halfway through the 2nd half of their loss to UCONN, Florida head coach Billy Donovan called out this play to PG Scottie Wilbekin to get his Gators to run some offense for multiple looks. If you follow the Gators or Coach Donovan, you know he is one of the best at teaching and executing continuity offense. While they frequently run baseline runner/rhody actions, I love this new addition to his playbook. There are multiple scoring opportunities to attack any defensive adjustments in this action. Basketball Play - 42 Double

42 Double

Kyle Gilreath 10/25/2013

When playing good defensive teams, it can require simultaneous actions to occupy the help and open up more scoring opportunities. The play below gives you several scoring plays to counter any defensive rotations. 1. Screening 4 into the pick & roll with 2 can cause X4 to be late and give 2 a mid-range jumper. 2. If X4 and X2 to caught guarding 2, 4 will be open on the pop/roll as the rest of the help defense is occupied in the weak side screening action. 3. If the defense falls sleep or focuses more on the side pick & roll 3 may be open for the lob. See More

Basketball Play - 3-3 Conversion

3-3 Conversion

Daniel Murphy 09/30/2013

Drill stolen from Coach Bob Hurley of St. Anthony H.S. He in turn got it from Dick Harter. As a rule the player who defensive rebounds or takes the ball out of bounds after a score is on offense and the old offense always converts to defense. This is similar to 11 man break or other 3-3 drills where the defense comes in from the sideline, but in my opinion is a little more practical because the defense had to convert from offense and is in a more realistic game scenario. Many successful coaches believe transition defense is one of the top 3 skills a team must have. As such, defensive transition should be drilled daily. A note about drills-make sure to teach the skills you want. Stopping the ball, protecting the basket, communicating, screening, passing, cuttining etc. You can play this drill for a set amount of time ie. 8 minutes and keep score. Depending on what you as a coach want to emphasize, points can be given or taken for offensive rebounds, turnovers etc. Because it is 3-3 conversion, a short clock can be used to promote an aggressive offensive attack. Basketball Play - War

War

Kyle Gilreath 08/20/2013

1 On 1 I recommend starting this drill 1-on-1 first. Start with one rebounder (X1) with their head just in front of the rim and the first offensive rebounder at the elbow opposite the coach with the ball. Place the rest of the team in a line; they are all on offense. Once the coach shoots the ball, X1 must block out 1 and rebound the ball. The play is not over until X1 has secured the ball. The only way for X1 to get out of the drill is to make five consecutive stops (The offense cannot rebound the ball). The number is interchangeable but five is a good starting point. 2 On 2 War (2-on-2) really encourages a more competitive team atmosphere. Divide your players into two teams and put four minutes on the clock. One team will go to the baseline and the other team to the top of the key. Place a coach at the free-throw/1-point line area with a ball. The clocks starts once the coach shoots the ball. X1 and X2 are responsible for blocking out 1 and 2 respectively. If the defense rebounds the ball, they receive one point. If the offense rebounds the ball, the drill is not over; they must score in order to receive a point. At this point the drill is still not over, the offense should attempt to grab as many rebounds as possible and score as many points as possible. The drill is not over until the defense secures the basketball. Once the buzzer sounds and the current group finishes, keep the scores up on the board and flip offense to defense. Put another four minutes back up on the clock and start the drill again. Remember, the team now on offense was just on defense and vice versa, so make sure you are still giving points to the correct team. (i.e.: If at the end of the first four minutes the offensive team {Team A} scored 11 points, once they become the defense their first defensive rebound would get {Team A} 12 points and so on). If there is a high intensity level, keep the drill going and go through another session. Once you are satisfied with your team’s effort tally up the scores. Let the winning team grab water first while the losing team runs. See More

Basketball Play - Block Curls

Block Curls

Adam Spinella 07/27/2013

Jerry Sloan used to use this play in a BLOB situation to free up his shooters and create confusion amongst the defense. Because of the odd formation and amount of bodies in the paint as a result, Utah would get a free look from the periemter or catch a defender out of position in the paint trying to compensate for their team's poor defensive strategy. Basketball Play - "Split Post"

"Split Post"

Kyle Gilreath 07/08/2013

The Orlando Magic ran this action on versus the Boston Celtics during the 2013 Orlando Summer League. This is just another option out of the elbow set that I discussed several weeks ago! With the defense in helpside position (especially in high school in college where defensive 3 seconds is not a rule), this is a great action if you have bigger guards to duck and seal hard in the middle of the lane for a quick turn and finish. Basketball Play - Pacer Late Clock SLOB

Pacer Late Clock SLOB

Kevin Bruinsma 06/18/2013

Although this set didn't result in a basket or even free throws it forced a great defensive effort from the Miami Heat to stop the Pacers from scoring. This action puts a lot of pressure on the defense as they have to guard a mis direction cut by the 2, then the stagger iverson action for #24 Paul George who everyone thinks the play is going to, a flare screen for #21 David West, and then finally a slip/dive to the rim by #55 Roy Hibbert. This set had some fantastic actions. See More

Basketball Play - Memphis Staggered Rip

Memphis Staggered Rip

Daniel Murphy 06/02/2013

Memphis ran this play at the 5:21 mark of their game three loss to the Spurs. This layup by Randolph put Memphis up by 11. The Spurs made two consecuctive defensive errors on this play. First, Randolph was doubled in the post leaving Gasol wide open at the free throw line. After Pondexter ball faked to the free throw line both Spurs guarding Randolph ran to the free throw line. Z-Bo was left unguarded on the block for the layup. Regardless of the Spurs defensive lapses, this is a good set involving screening to get the ball into the post. See More

Basketball Play - Spurs Triple

Spurs Triple

Daniel Murphy 06/01/2013

The Spurs ran this at the 7:15 mark in the first quarter of their 104-93 game 3 win over Memphis. This is one of my favorite sets the Spurs run and it is very difficult to guard because the defender has to run off three screens and there are a variety of counters to each defensive adjustment. Often the 2 man comes offf 5's zipper screen but in this situation, 2 just cut to the top and 5 set the first of three screens. This play demonstrates just one option and read of many possibilities. The ending to this play was great because Memphis trapped the ball screen, Paker hit the pop man Duncan and then Duncan hit Paker on the backdoor cut. The unselfish ball movement by the Spurs is a great part of their offense. See More
