About This Play/Drill

During the past decade, especially after the 2006 FIBA world championship, the pick and roll offense was given a newfound level of attention. The avenues with which you can go down when discussing the pick and roll are endless (angles, spacing, player development, proper defensive technique).

Here are the common options which the other three players outside of the PNR action can be involved in. There are definitely more options for the “other 3” but these are the most common approaches teams use today.

  • Basic Relocation: 3 relocates to maintain/create good spacing for 1

  • 2 lifts or shakes behind the pick and roll while X2 helps on/tags 5 (screener/roller)

  • 4 fills behind the pick and roll while X4 helps/tags 5 (screener/roller)

  • 2 and 4 exchange positions to occupy/move the help side defense

  • 4 reacts to the pick and roll action by:

    a- replace the screener/roller

b- follow the ball handler to remove the low tag

c- to clear out and open up the middle

  • 4 cuts through to create proper spacing for the ball handler

  • 4 cuts through to remove/occupy X4 (help defense)

  • 4 Cuts through to freeze X3 (low help side) which opens up 3 on the weakside

  • 5 ducks-in when X5 loads to the ball and seals him to receive a pass by 1 (ball handler) or to create a clear penetration path to the rim.

  • When X4 helps/stunts on the penetration by 1, 4 cuts to the basket

  • 4 cuts to post-up in front of the pick and roll

  • 2 comes off the pins/screen by 3 and 5 to occupy/remove the help defense

  • 4 sets down screen for 2 on the helpside to occupy/move the help defense

  • 4 sets backscreen for 2 to create an open corner shot for him on the weakside

  • 2 comes off inside pins by 3 and 5 for an open perimeter/corner shot or an inside curl to the rim

  • 2 sets a cross screen for an inside feed to 5 or for a perimeter open shot after a screen for screener action by 4

  • 2 comes off staggered screens by 1 and 4 to remove help/tags defense and to create an open perimeter shot

  • To create confusion for help defense, another option for using staggered screens by 1 and 4 could be a curl by 2 which leads to a down screen for 1 and an open perimeter shot.
