Basketball Play - 1 on 1 Guard Drill

1 on 1 Guard Drill

Matt Hackenberg 04/13/2022

In this diagram and embedded video we look one of my favorite defensive drills. I don't see this concept being taught much. The drill is to teach defenders to stay between the ball and the rim in high conflict situations, and force the offense take the toughest shot possible without fouling. Your players can get very good at this skill if it is emphasized enough. Basketball Play - 1 on 1 Rooftop

1 on 1 Rooftop

Randy Sherman 04/29/2015

The drill introduces the rooftop concept and 1 on 1 on the ball defense. It can and should be run on both sides of the floor with larger groups, but is depicted only on one side of the floor in this diagram. On-the-ball defenders keep heels on the rooftop and influence ball handler to sideline checkpoint. Establish the proper stance angle, drag hand and lead hand. When offensive player reaches the sideline checkpoint they reverse pivot and heads back up the rooftop. The goal as the ball heads back up the rooftop is to prevent the ball handler from busting through the rooftop. See More

Coach calls "GO" Players sprint toward cones Coach calls "LEFT" or "RIGHT" Players break around cones (touch baseline if you don't have or wish to use cones) to that side and outside player is on offense. In this example, coach calls "RIGHT" and 1 is on offense. Move cones to different spots on floor to change angles of attack See More

Basketball Play - Three Point Close Out/1 on 1 Drill

Three Point Close Out/1 on 1 Drill

Randy Brown 12/15/2014

Toughness and execution are the features of this three point close out drill. The goal is for the offensive player to get an open theee point shot at the top of the key. The defender's mission is to take the shot away. If he is successful they play 1 on 1 until a foul, basket, or defensive stop occurs. You can use this as an individual or team drill. It fosters toughness, shot selection and three point accuracy, decision making, closing out, defending and rebounding with two hands. It can add healthy peer pressure to your practices. See More

Basketball Play - Off the Ball 1 on 1 Drill

Off the Ball 1 on 1 Drill

Fabian McKenzie 07/04/2014

This is a good drill for players to work on getting open away from the ball. The defensive player must also work very hard to prevent 1 from making an easy catch. The passer must also work at delivering the pass on time and on target. You can play to a set score or a set number of stops. We will move spots on the floor to increase the difficulty for the offense or defense See More
