Basketball Play - Dive Double Spin

Dive Double Spin

Adam Spinella 07/31/2013

Dive Double Spin is a very precise and complex way to get a backdoor opportunity. While it may be just a bit too complex to run at a high school level, its level of success at the collegiate level was astounding. At the University of Indiana, Kelvin Sampson used this play to get his best finishers an opportunity at the rim without challenge. See More

Coach Wooden preached ball movement from side-to-side, making the defense move frequently and never letting the ball settle. With lots of quick passes in 10 to 15 foot gaps, Wooden was a master at designing plays that forced his teams to share the ball. As a counter, many defenses would start to jump passing lanes or make perimeter passing more difficult. When that would occur, Wooden would run "Indiana", a backdoor set that played through the high post. See More

The final play from this John Wooden series is a set that Wooden used to run for a shooter to let them come off an exit screen. An exit screen, also known as a single-double, is where the shooter sticks their head under the rim and has the option to come off either side. One side will have one screener (the single side) and the other has two screeners (the double side). While Wooden believed in spacing and getting the ball inside, great shooters needed to be utilized and this set was one way he could feature some of his outside snipers. See More

The University of Florida ran this offensive set on Saturday afternoon in their victory over the Alabama Crimson Tide. Florida is not known for having very big point guards, but coach Billy Donovan does a terrific job teaching them skills all around the basket; especially in the post. In this play he sets up an off the block pick and roll with Scottie Wilbekin and Patrick Young. Some may think this play is easy to guard but with two knock down shooters in Murphy and Rosario on the perimeter, it is very difficult to help. See More

The Chicago Bulls ran this action Saturday evening versus the Brooklyn Nets in Game 1 of the 2013 NBA Playoffs. This is an excellent play that makes it harder to help and tag on the pick & roll because the defense has to respect Hinrich (1) coming off the double screen on the weak side. See More

The Kentucky Wildcats ran this half-court set during the 2012 Men's Final Four. Coach Calipari does a great job with this action occupying the weak side defense with a double (stagger) action. 2 had the option of using the pick & roll (with Anthony Davis rolling), or he could turn down the screen because X1 and X4 consumed with the weak side action. The Wisconsin Badgers ran this quick hitter in their National Semi-Final game vs Kentucky in 2014. The key to this play is for 3 to be patient and curl off tight shoulder to shoulder. To see EVERY play Florida ran in the 2014 Final Four you can do so in my eBook Championship Execution! See More
