Basketball Play - "21" High Ball Screen Attack

"21" High Ball Screen Attack

Matt Hackenberg 12/14/2021

In this diagram and embedded video we look at a simple ball screen concept. We used this when we had two attacking guards we wanted to keep out front, allowing them to create by using a ball screen or rejecting into the gap. We wanted to keep shooters in the corners as much as possible. For as simple as the cocnept was, it was fairly effective against good competition. We started to add other options to make the offense less predictable with the zip and DHO options. Video clips below. Basketball Play - 21 Series Transition Offense

21 Series Transition Offense

Matt Hackenberg 12/15/2021

The 21 series is usually a 3-player action that happens right out of transition. The bunch action makes the options easy to disguise, almost like play action fakes in football. There are a variety of actions that can come from this series, and they all develop quickly, making them ideal for teams that want to play with a fast tempo. Not all the diagrams are represented with clips in the video below, but this was all I could dig up on film. Basketball Play - Zip HO Step Up Hammer SLOB

Zip HO Step Up Hammer SLOB

Matt Hackenberg 12/16/2021

In this diagram and video clip we see a longer form SLOB to create a three-pointer off of hammer action. Sometimes I love this set, and other times, I wish it would just get to the point. I really do like flowing pattern of the set, and hammer action is one of my favorites. All of the action is set up up well using screens to make sure players are open when they need to be. Basketball Play - Zip Slot Double Flare SLOB

Zip Slot Double Flare SLOB

Matt Hackenberg 12/16/2021

In this diagram and video clip we see a SLOB that ends in a double flare screen. I think it's an interesting action, but maybe a set to save for use at the right time instead of using it often. I think the movement pattern has great felxibility to be paired with other options that look similar in flow, but don't use the double flare. Video below. Miami Heat - Hammer Lay Up

Tony Miller 12/18/2021

Watch the video below as Coach Tony Miller uses FastDraw, the #1 play diagramming program for basketball coaches, to break down this ATO design from the Miami Heat under head coach Erik Spoelstra. Help side defenders can’t not get caught watching the ball as the double step up ball screen occurs on the strong side, leaving 2 a chance to slip to the rim. Send to FastDraw using the button above. Cleveland Cavaliers - Triangle Twist BLOB

Tony Miller 12/22/2021

Watch the video below as Coach Tony Miller uses FastDraw, the #1 play diagramming program for basketball coaches, to break down this BLOB design from the Cleveland Cavaliers and coach J.B. Bickerstaff. This STS action seems like it would be for 2, but is actually for 4. Yet if the defense drifts to 4, 2 will be wide open for a layup. Send to FastDraw using the button above. Basketball Play - Zone Set: Step Up Overload

Zone Set: Step Up Overload

Matt Hackenberg 12/28/2021

In this diagram and video clip we see a set to attack a zone. This set overloads the zone and makes the defense choose who they are going to cover. This set tries to make the defense "guard air" so that someone on offense is open because the defense doesn't shift to cover out of their zone. The point guard needs to be a great decision maker and read the defense properly to see who the open player will be. Video below. Box Misdirection Screen In

Matt Hackenberg 12/31/2021

In this diagram and video clip we see a set play for a three-point shot. I think this is a tricky action that can be used in "need a 3" situations. Pairing with other actions out of a box alignment will increase the set's effectiveness. Push Zip Iverson Series - Blind Pig

Matt Hackenberg 12/31/2021

In this diagram and video clip we see a series of plays from the push zip Iverson movement series. The featured action in the video is the blind pig backdoor. This is a clever action, and with good timing it can be very tough to defend. Central Arkansas - Circle Motion: Basic Ball Screen

Matt Hackenberg 01/05/2022

In this diagram and embedded video we look at a set play out of the Circle Motion Offense. This set play comes from Central Arkansas, and has a spread ball screen evolvong directly out of the circle motion action. The ball screener really has to get on their horse to get to the ball screen for solid timing on this action. Horns Ball Screen - Roll/Pop Into Duck & Pins

Matt Hackenberg 01/06/2022

In this diagram and embedded video we look at a set play out of the horns alignment. The horns ball screen, rolling and popping, creates great 4 around 1 spacing for the high/low. I like the flow of the play after the high/low look, using the DHO to set up action on both sides. I would bet that at least one of the sides isn't defended properly after the high/low action.
