Basketball Play - Euro Ball Screen into Low Cross Screen (Set Play)

Euro Ball Screen into Low Cross Screen (Set Play)

Matt Hackenberg 12/09/2021

Here we look at a set play that evolves directly from the Euro Ball Screen Offense, designed to get a forward cutting to the basket for an interior touch. I love set plays that originate out of a team's main offense, effectively masking the action to make it harder for the defense to prepare for. Basketball Play - Euro Ball Screen Offense ("Wave")

Euro Ball Screen Offense ("Wave")

Matt Hackenberg 12/09/2021

In 2014, the team I was coaching lost in the Ohio High School State Finals to a GREAT defensive team. We ran our entire offensive package (dribble drive, sets, high ball screens, etc.) at them and could not get any good looks. The feeling from that game led me on a search to find a great continuity offense that included screening, ball reversals and the option to use it for interior shots or perimeter shots. The search culminated in finding the 5-Out Euro Ball Screen Offense from watching the Olympics. We took the basics of the offense, added some bells and whistles, and made it something that could accomplish all we were looking for in an offense. We incorporated sets out of the flow of the offense, motion numbered cutting principles and various entries to spice things up. We put all that information into 45 extremely detailed pages of a PDF file on this offense and all the teaching points involved in making it your offense. It was our first year running it as our main offense but used it as a set play the previous season. We were able to use a lot of different features within the offense to attack our opponents and many of those features are outlined in this video. Depending on the strengths of the players, the offense can be more tailored for the perimeter or the interior. We used multiple entries including several not shown on the video and numbered cut system so the players could communicate which screens and cuts they were about to make. Basketball Play - Euro Ball Screen (2-3 Zone Quick Hitter)

Euro Ball Screen (2-3 Zone Quick Hitter)

Matt Hackenberg 12/10/2021

Skip to 6:30 mark of the embedded video below. The diagrams and video show how using the Euro Ball Screen Offense against 1-3 zone functions. We ran this as a set every year we had the Euro Ball Screen Offense installed and it worked very well 2-3 times per game against zone. After that, the defense tended to figure it out. Basketball Play - High Ball Screen Continuity Offense: "Flow"

High Ball Screen Continuity Offense: "Flow"

Matt Hackenberg 12/10/2021

This is a breakdown of an offense we call "Flow." Flow is three guard, two forward offense that is a hybrid of a ball screen offense and dribble drive concepts. It has options to attack driving gaps and play pick and roll. I really think the roll and replace concept is hard to guard, and we often found the replacing big wide open at the top of the key. Obviously, playmaking guards are a centerpiece to this concept. Basketball Play - Princeton Offense - Multi-Option Set: "Hawk"

Princeton Offense - Multi-Option Set: "Hawk"

Matt Hackenberg 12/12/2021

This is a long form play with multiple options from a Princeton alignment and a floppy action to feature a dynamic player. If the player can drive, shoot, post up, finish off the cuts or use a ball screen there are options to do so. We used the play to feature a shooter, but a post up player or a driver could also be used, just different options would need to be emphasized. Basketball Play - Horns Set Play: "Circle"

Horns Set Play: "Circle"

Matt Hackenberg 12/12/2021

This is a set play out of a horns alignment we use with multiple options. First, we use the alignment to let a playmaker attack and read the defense with the horns ball screen, roll/pop action. We want to play off the ball handler, and if we can't create a shot off the initial attack, look to play 4 around 1 with our big to get it inside. Then we look at a couple simple set options that play off of the base action. Video clip below. Basketball Play - Box "Slice" Series: 5 Options

Box "Slice" Series: 5 Options

Matt Hackenberg 12/12/2021

We used a box set with the same initial action to start each play, and then used a numbering system to decide which option we would use. The series sets up multiple back doors, a rejected ball screen to an empty baseline and a stagger screen. I've had this installed every year I've been a head coach, and it works like a charm. Using the same movement pattern for each play allows you to install one play with five different options. Video clip below. Basketball Play - "21" High Ball Screen Attack

"21" High Ball Screen Attack

Matt Hackenberg 12/14/2021

In this diagram and embedded video we look at a simple ball screen concept. We used this when we had two attacking guards we wanted to keep out front, allowing them to create by using a ball screen or rejecting into the gap. We wanted to keep shooters in the corners as much as possible. For as simple as the cocnept was, it was fairly effective against good competition. We started to add other options to make the offense less predictable with the zip and DHO options. Video clips below.
