Basketball Play - Virginia Cavaliers - PNR Continuity

Virginia Cavaliers - PNR Continuity

Matt Wheeler 04/04/2019

Virginia uses a pick and roll continuity set that provides multiple opportunities for ball screens in a single possession. 1 dribbles off the ball screen looking for 5 rolling to the basket. If he isn’t available, 1 immediately passes to 4 up top. 4 looks for a quick pass to 5 continuing his cut to the rim. This is extremely effective against teams that hard hedge because x5 now has to sprint back to the paint to take away the layup. If 4 doesn’t have anything he will reverse the ball to one of the perimeter players. Just like in their motion offense, Virginia gives their players freedom to make decisions in this play. Most of the time 2 will make a backdoor cut, then 4 will follow his pass to 3 with a ball screen. This action can run continuously on both sides of the floor until they get the shot they want. The Cavaliers have the option of 4 reversing the ball to 2 and following with the ball screen. If this happens 3 cuts to the opposite corner, taking the place of 2 and keeping the continuity going. Basketball Play - Ohio State Buckeyes - Weave Point Wide Fan

Ohio State Buckeyes - Weave Point Wide Fan

Dave Nedbalek 03/26/2019

Love this set. I am a huge fan of getting skilled bigs at the top of the key with the ball and space. The misdirection to begin softens the defense up and then there are countless possibilities you can finish this set with. I love the natural push of the drive off of the weave and Chicago action handoff into the flare on the weak side. That flare can be easily mis-guarded and result in a slip and a wide open layup for the screener. I love the built in throw-back, or "shake" action with the ball screen, roll, and corner lift as well. A lot of bang for your buck with this one. See More

Basketball Play - Ohio State Buckeyes - Weave Euro Chase

Ohio State Buckeyes - Weave Euro Chase

Dave Nedbalek 03/26/2019

This set involves a great amount of false motion that can easily be used to create scoring opportunities if you look to exploit any missteps. Have your players not rush the backdoor cuts especially on the weak side opposite of the big as this is a viable scoring cut. If there are any miscues on the handoffs the ball handler can easily fake the handoff and have a wide open lane to the rim. There are lot of great counters you could run out of this such as turn the last backdoor cut into a smash cut or even cross screen for a throwback post feed. See More

Basketball Play - Michigan Wolverines - 23 Weave Wide Smash

Michigan Wolverines - 23 Weave Wide Smash

Dave Nedbalek 03/26/2019

This set gets the defense moving prior to a smash ball screen (screening the bigs defender so the big can arrive alone with no ball screen coverage). I love the side changes this set generates, and I love the pin screen for the guard coming back out at the end. I love the screens because of their ability to be slipped in miscommunication situations. A wrinkle could also be the guard who sets the smash screen posting up his defender after lifting the big to the top of the key. See More

Basketball Play - Florida Gators - Box Rip Chicago

Florida Gators - Box Rip Chicago

Dave Nedbalek 03/26/2019

This is a good set from the Florida Gators utilizing the pressure of a hard cut off a backscreen into a Chicago action (downscreen into a handoff) which creates multiple decision situations for the defense. Here Michigan stays hugged up on the perimeter shooters of Florida and creates an easy deep post entry pass. See More

Basketball Play - Atlanta Hawks - 24 PNR Trail

Atlanta Hawks - 24 PNR Trail

Matt Barnthouse 03/24/2019

This is an interesting set by the Hawks. Definitely takes advantage of having 4 players that on the floor that can shoot. Allows Kevin Huerter (2) and Dewayne Dedmon (5) to operate in a pick and roll with adequate spacing all around. What I like about this is the timing involved. When Dedmon recognized Huerter had his man beat, he waited a about a quarter of a second to roll so that Huerter could have an opportunity at clean look at rim, while still being there as a trailer should the defense overhelp. This is a lot harder to run if your team does not have 4 players that are threats to shoot, because there is less spacing if they are able to gap the 4, making it more difficult to get to the rim, even if the ball handler beats his man! Basketball Play - Belmont Bruins - Nail Flare

Belmont Bruins - Nail Flare

Timothy Hipps 03/23/2019

This is a set the Belmont Bruins brought with them to the 2019 NCAA Tournament. It's a great set for a wing scorer to drive the ball against his defender. This set is part of a larger series of plays we will call "Nail". It's great set for a "stretch 4" or great screener who can shoot the 3. Blog Post: Mid-Major Teams Poised to Make Noise See More
