Basketball Play - Wing Deny-Close Outs

Wing Deny-Close Outs

Randy Sherman 04/25/2015

Wing Deny/Close Out Drill Teaching Tips: When Coach has the ball at top of circle both defenders are denying v-cuts Goal #1: knock away deflection Goal #2: force offensive player to catch going away from the basket with his/her back to the rim Force offensive players to baseline checkpoint. DO NOT GET DRIVEN OVER THE TOP! Monitor close out technique If offensive player attempt to drive middle, reach step and force your man back up the rooftop As the player you're guarding moves closer to the rim on v-cut, close the space. As they move to perimeter, stay in deny stance but move closer to the ball. Drill Advancements: Coach attempts to penetrate. Wing defender DOES NOT open up to help seal drive. Instead he/she stays in deny stance and "plugs the drive with butt" Wing player attacks baseline. Help defender helps to seal drive outside the lane Allow wing players to cross screen for one another Instruct wing player to attempt an over-the-top drive every time they catch. Defeders should reach step and force ball-handler back up the rooftop. See More

Basketball Play - 2 on 2 on Top

2 on 2 on Top

Randy Sherman 04/23/2015

Objective: Drill for jumping to the ball in deny stance Defending long fast basket cuts Denying out and forcing catches going away from the basket Make sure on the ball defenders follow "rooftop rules" with their stance and angle. Drill Advancements: When the ball is on the wing and the cutter is emptying, have wing player make a baseline drive so defender must sit on midline and help on drive (don't chase cutter without losing sight of the ball) Coach calls "Live!" at any time and the drill becomes 4v2 Live with the two defended players as the cutter and the undefended players as screeners. Basketball Play - Mavericks Spread Pick

Mavericks Spread Pick

Wes Kosel 04/23/2015

Here are 3 options from the Dallas Mavericks to get Dirk Nowitzki a shot on a pick & pop. In option 1, the ball is reversed through Nowitzki to 3 on the right side of the floor. Nowitzki sets a ball-screen for 3 and pops for a shot. In option 2, 5 sets a ball-screen for 1 to drive baseline. 5 rolls and Nowitzki replaces 5. In option 3, Nowitzki flips the ball-screen for 3 so that he can drive baseline. Nowitzki pops towards the elbow for a shot. See More

Thunder Flex Stagger

Wes Kosel 04/21/2015

In this flex option, 2 cuts up towards the top of the key instead of into the lane on the cross screen. 5 moves down to set the staggered screen for 2 cutting up for a shot. 3 passes to 2 for a shot at the top of the key. If 2 doesn't have a shot, he passes to 1 then clears to the ball-side corner. 5 screens for 1 and 1 attacks into the lane. See More

Basketball Play - Bulls Secondary Hand-Off for Rose

Bulls Secondary Hand-Off for Rose

Wes Kosel 04/21/2015

In this play, Rose starts with the ball and passes to the trail man then cuts to the opposite corner. The ball is moved to the right wing as 4 screens away for 2. If 2 isn't open, he passes to 4 on the pop as 1 cuts across the baseline around a staggered screen from 5 and 3. If Rose isn't open on the stagger, he cuts into the lane looking to get the hand-off from 4. Through all off the actions, Rose circles the entire floor forcing his defender to chase him around. Basketball Play - UNC Secondary (Dribble Option)

UNC Secondary (Dribble Option)

Randy Sherman 04/15/2015

Counters to the UNC Secondary Break. "Dribble" option is a counter to denial of pass to the trailing post. It is a read not a call. Players react to point guard dribbling over the high ball screen from the trailer. Tips: 2's rule is the same: Touch the block then backscreen for trailer 4 goes and sets the ball screen even with the lane line 2 takes one or two dribbles after separating from the screen and looks to make "scoop" entry into the post See More

Basketball Play - Duke Zone Over the Top

Duke Zone Over the Top

Wes Kosel 04/03/2015

This play was used eary in the game against Robert Morris and resulted in a foul down low as Okafor went up for a shot off of the hi/lo pass. Coach K does a great job creating an overload that forces Robert Morris to spread out and leave 1 defender on Okafor under the basket. Okafor seals the middle man in the zone and looks for the pass over the top. In the game, x4 could have helped on the lob pass but was stuck anticipating that the ball would be pass to Tyus Jones for a 3-point shot. See More
