Basketball Play - 41 Loop

41 Loop

Matt Hackenberg 12/06/2021

Getting space for penetration can lead to wonderful things, as we explore in this simple diagram and embedded video. Today we look at a simple movement pattern to create space for a driver to finish at the rim, or kick to a shooter. Sometimes us coaches overcomplicate things. Getting your best driver in some space to attack can be enough at times. Basketball Play - 5 Out: Swing DHO Cross

5 Out: Swing DHO Cross

Matt Hackenberg 12/06/2021

In this diagram and embedded video, we use a 5 Out alignment to get the ball inside. What I love about this set is the little on big screen that has the potential to put the defense in a tough spot if the screen is not handled well. There are endless possibilites out of the 5 Out alignment for creative play calling. Basketball Play - 4 Out: DHO Back Screen Cross Screen

4 Out: DHO Back Screen Cross Screen

Matt Hackenberg 12/06/2021

In this diagram and embedded video we look at a set play out of a 4 Out transition that creates a guard cross screening for a post. I like how the back screen frees up the post player to catch the ball in prime position to read the cross screen. Basketball Play - UCLA Duck Stagger

UCLA Duck Stagger

Matt Hackenberg 12/06/2021

In this diagram and embedded video we have a set play sometimes referred to as “moon” action but with a little twist. The twist is a quick point guard duck in before using the stagger screen. I like this design because it has actions happening on both sides of the court at the same time, which keeps the help side occupied. Basketball Play - 1-4 High: UCLA Floppy Duck

1-4 High: UCLA Floppy Duck

Matt Hackenberg 12/06/2021

In diagram and embedded video we look at a set play out of a 1-4 high alignment. After a wing entry and UCLA screen, the ball is centered and there is an option to use screens on either side for a shooter. If a shot isn’t there off the screen, it’s time for those screeners to seal up for an interior touch. Basketball Play - Swing Pin Gap

Swing Pin Gap

Matt Hackenberg 12/06/2021

In this diagram and embedded video we look at a set play for a gap drive. I like this set and think it is unique in how it is designed. In my opinion, gap drive concepts are always in demand by coaches. Basketball Play - Princeton Chin

Princeton Chin

Matt Hackenberg 12/05/2021

This diagram and film looks at the basic Princeton Chin action. The action is a bit monotonous, but can be very effective. The action is a continuity, so you can just keep running it until you get a scoring opportunity. It's very good against pressure defense. Basketball Play - Spread Ball Screen - False Motion

Spread Ball Screen - False Motion

Matt Hackenberg 12/05/2021

In this diagram and embedded video we get into a simple spread ball screen action after some false motion. I like the spacing and movement of the design. Spread ball screen concepts are penetrating high school basketball more and more. Shifting the defense before the action adds a little risk, but allows the offense to attack with the defense on the move. Basketball Play - Princeton Point Series

Princeton Point Series

Matt Hackenberg 12/05/2021

In this diagram + video we look at a few options to use out of the Princeton Point Series. The diagrams show the different entries, and the video shows some different options to use in a series. The options you could use are unlimited, but here is a group of actions to consider out of the series. This series can be hard to guard when executed correctly. Basketball Play - The Spread Offense

The Spread Offense

Matt Hackenberg 12/03/2021

In this diagram and embedded video, we look at the spread offense used in high school basketball. This offense uses the high post and a series of cutters to attack the defense in a variety of ways. This offensive concept has always been a unique and interesting play style to me, ever since I first saw it when Stephen F. Austin was running it under Brad Underwood in the early 2010's. The offense has evolved quite a bit, but in the video below you will see a lot of the more basic options used when it is ran at the high school level. Basketball Play - Crack Down Lob BLOB vs Zone

Crack Down Lob BLOB vs Zone

Matt Hackenberg 12/02/2021

It's baffling to me how often we would score on this simple play. We used it more as a BLOB special, about once every game or so. The less often you run it, the more effective it will be. The counter action, as seen in the diagram and in the embedded video, can also create some decent looks for your team, but that action requires more work once the ball is entered than the initial action. Basketball Play - Drift Ball Screen Reject Hammer

Drift Ball Screen Reject Hammer

Matt Hackenberg 12/02/2021

In this diagram/video we look at a set play to get a three pointer. It’s a hammer action, which were always fun to me as a coach to see executed. Rejecting the side ball screen usually sucks the defense in, and allows for the weak side defender to get pinned in. The embedded video shows the set in more detail. Box Zip Duck

Matt Hackenberg 12/02/2021

In today’s diagram/video we look at a set play to get the ball inside. A box set is used with some misdirection to get a touch on the block. The embedded video shows a handful of possessions using this set play.
