The Indiana Pacers ran this After Time-Out drawn up by Frank Vogel during their win over the Washington Wizards in Game 4 of 2014 EC Semi-Finals. What made this play so effective was Paul George's (3) hesitation under the rim creating enough space with his defender to get through the screen for the catch & shoot. See More

In the closing seconds of their Game 5 victory over the LA Clippers (2014 WC Semi-Finals), Thunder head coach Scott Brooks drew up this BLOB which resulted in Westbrook (1) being fouled taking a 3-pointer. Only down 2 points, I was somewhat baffled when Westbrook decided not to attempt the game tying lay-up but rather dribble out and take the contested 3-pointer (which resulted in 3 points because of the foul). Down 3 at the end of Game 5 of the 2014 EC Semi-Finals, Jason Kidd drew up this sideline out-of-bounds play for the Brooklyn Nets. This was a great action which incorporated multiple screen the screener actions. However, Johnson (4) was unable to get a shot off as Miami deflected the ball out of bounds on the catch. See More

Basketball Play - 2 on 1 Triangle Fast Break

2 on 1 Triangle Fast Break

Kyle Gilreath 05/29/2014

Following drill was a part of a skill packet we mailed out to coaches when I was at the University of Florida. Two offensive players start 2-3 feet outside of the lane along the baseline. Start the defensive player at the free-throw line. Drill starts with a coach holding a ball around the free-throw line area, and passing it to one of the offensive players. Once the ball is passed, the defensive player should immediately turn and sprint to half-court and get down in a defensive stance with active hands. The offensive players should remain 2-3 feet outside of the lane as they attack the other end. They should not be too wide, so the defense can recover, and not be too close, so the defense is able to cover both players. The offensive player with the ball should not pass the ball until the defense totally commits to him (bounce pass for lay-up). If the defense does not commit, shoot a lay-up. See More

2 on 2 Triangle Fast Break

Kyle Gilreath 05/29/2014

Following drill was a part of a skill packet we mailed out to coaches when I was at the University of Florida. Yesterday I posted phase 1 of the build up with the 2-on-1. A 2nd defender is added whose main job is to spring back down the floor and get back into the play. Start with the same set-up as you did in the 2-on-1 drill, but place the 2nd defender under the rim. The 2nd defender’s goal is to get to the inside track of the player opposite of the ball. Just like in the 2-on-1 drill, the offensive players are trying to attack the rim to score, remaining 2-3 feet outside of the lane. See More

Basketball Play - Motion Hold

Motion Hold

Kyle Gilreath 05/29/2014

Motion Hold is a great play to run in a late game situation in which you are holding for a last shot or waiting for the defensive to commit a foul. This play incorporates multiple screening options to get either wing open. In most cases you want to keep the ball in your guard(s) hands for better ball-handling and free throw shooting. However, if you get into an urgent situation your bigs are allowed to flash as a release if needed. The San Antonio Spurs ran this sideline out-of-bounds play during Game 6 of the 2014 Western Conference Finals vs the OKC Thunder. Kyle Gilreath 06/09/2014

Early in Game 2 of the 2014 NBA Finals, the San Antonio Spurs ran this pick & roll action which ended with a hi-low feed from Splitter to Duncan. Spacing the floor with 2 (Parker) and 3 (Green) prevented the defense from shading to the ball side in order to alter a easy catch & shoot from the perimeter. See More

In Game 2 of the 2014 NBA Finals the Miami Heat ran this play to get Wade an iso post lifted off the block. It seemed the defense knew this was coming but was still unable to stop the post feed as Wade had a smaller defender on him at the time. See More

Kyle Gilreath 06/09/2014

In Game 2 of the 2014 NBA Final, LeBron James went on a scoring streak in the 2nd half and became unguardable. The Spurs did a very good job guarding him, he was just unconscious. If you watch the Heat you know that Erik Spoelstra loves running elbow actions that usually go into a flex or some kind of hand-off with a weak side pin-down. However, on this set he got the ball to the hot hand, LeBron, by running the double curl action. See More

With 3 seconds left in the 3rd quarter of Game 3 of the 2014 NBA Finals, the San Antonio Spurs ran this sideline out-of-bounds play. As soon as 1 cleared Diaw’s shoulder he shaped up back to the ball immediately to receive the pass from Green. Green was able to get a shot off but Miami’s defense prevent him from getting a clean look and the shot came up short. See More
