Basketball Play - Close Out & Contest Drill

Close Out & Contest Drill

Matt Hackenberg 01/31/2022

In today’s diagram and embedded video we look at a defensive drill. I like this drill as a change of pace to use instead of shell defense during the team defense block in our practice plan. Basketball Play - Jump Stop Finishing Drill

Jump Stop Finishing Drill

Matt Hackenberg 01/21/2022

In this diagram and embedded video we look at a drill to work on finishing off of a jump stop. We preach to our players about being on balance and using jump stops, so we want to show them solutions for how to create space and shots off the two foot stop. Matt Hackenberg 01/08/2022

BLOG & PLAYBOOK - Chino Hills Huskies: The Scheme Behind the Ball Brothers In this embedded video and diagram we look at the half court offense of the 35-0, state championship Chino Hills team of 2015-16. If you're looking for tricky sets, this isn't it. Chino Hills kept it very simple, but got a lot of mileage out of these three simple concepts. Basketball Play - Drill: 4v0 Pass, Cut, Fill

Drill: 4v0 Pass, Cut, Fill

Randy Sherman 12/04/2020

Excerpt from our latest playbook entitled "Four-Out Motion Offense: Teaching Through Drills" This drill introduces the basic movements of a basic version of four-out motion offense and the frame descriptions give lots of teaching points you can use to polish up many things you are probably already teaching. The concepts also govern 4v4 play and getting to 4v4 play ASAP is the goal. Further reading: #MotionOffenseTips: Fill Cutting 101 #MotionOffenseTips on Twitter! Basketball Play - SGP Shooting Series

SGP Shooting Series

Zachary Weir 07/24/2018

SGP Shooting Series is a drill that we run daily. It is a great drill for building not only shooting, passing, and dribbling skills - but also chemistry between players. This drill is used as a drill to work on reads versus defense and passing accuracy as well. We really stress pace of play in our offense and this drill is great for getting the players to feel the speed and pace they need to work at. Rules for the drill: Our goal is 10 shots per 1 min. With our better shooters we will go 12 per 1 min. We will go 12 minutes ideally, but on days that we fit this series into our individual drills we will go at the very least 8 minutes. You must thank the passer when you make a shot. You must call out the action that you are performing - i.e, curl, fade, etc. Alternate in air passes and bounce passes. Progression Coach as a defender Add secondary defender to read if players are ready Can also have the ball handler make a move off the dribble instead of triple threat See More

Basketball Play - Dribble Drive Motion: Finishing at the Rim

Dribble Drive Motion: Finishing at the Rim

Michael Lynch 07/04/2018

As part of #PlayerDevelopmentWeek I am putting together a series of drill progressions that we use in order to develop skills to fit our Dribble Drive Motion Offense. In this second installment we are looking at "Finishing at the Rim". What we are hoping for our players is that they can finish at the rim from multiple angles, and with a variety of finishes. The "1/0 Technique" Drill below makes our players finish from the three most common angles within our offense; 1) The Slot Drive, 2) The Wing Drive from the Corner, and the 3) Baseline Drive. We want our players to feel comfortable finishing with at least 1-2 different techniques from both their strong hand and their weak hand. So over the course of the season we will emphasize these finishes; 1) Extended Arm, 2) Scoop, 3) Inside Hand, 4) Stride Stop, 5) Jump Stops, & 6) Reverse Pivots. The "1/1 and 2/2 Russian" Drills are good once we have moved beyond the Phase A portion of finishing. Those two drills are not only fun for the players, but represent very common finishing opportunities within our offense, 1) The Slot Drive with an advantage and 2) The Drop Pass. Pick and Roll Progression

Zachary Weir 07/03/2018

This is the progression we use to prepare our players to be successful in running different PNR actions all over the court. We work on a combination of these actions every single day in order to get our players making quick and efficient reads in games. Click here for more #PlayerDevelopmentWeek content! See More

Basketball Play - Drill Progression - Crossover Step

Drill Progression - Crossover Step

Randy Sherman 05/05/2017

An example of "phasing" a drill focusing on a simple fundamental - the crossover step and finishing at the rim - and making it game like in the final phase. NOTE: Phase C is omitted because it would look the same as Phase B excpet that X1 could touch either cone after the flip. Thus it has a live element for Player 1 would not know what crossover step to use beforehand. For help with phase planning your drills.... See More

Basketball Play - Continuous Blast-Cuts

Continuous Blast-Cuts

Joel Hueser 09/13/2016

A good motion offense is hard to guard; all the while maintains good floor balance and spacing. This is done by cutting and replacing. Continuous blast cuts is a two line shooting drill that teaches just that. Our primary motion cut after passing off the top is toward the basket (aka basket cut). When that happens it is important to fill the open spot from the weakside with a blast cut. In doing so we like to emphasize the following: 2 Step Rule - Take your defender two steps toward the basker before blasting to the top. Recruit the Glute - Blast off of your baseline foot. Change of Speed - We like to say go in slow and come out fast. Outside Hand - Provide and pass to the outside hand away from the defense. Inside Pivot - We teach the inside pivot. On the catch, square up to the basket and look RPA (rim, post, action). This drill progresses through four phases: Catch & Shoot Shot Fake Blow-by Foot Fake Crossover Back-cut This is a great team shooting drill to incorporate at all levels: elementary ages to professional!
