This week I am going to share a series of plays that begin with rhody cuts. I term a rhody cut a cut from wing to wing above both elbows, usually off a screen or rub from one or both bigs. This elevator play is designed for a shooter to come off a misdirection cut back up the lane line to where he came from thru an elevator. What makes it so seductive for the shooter is that the elevator wasn't there when he made his original cut, so when he retraces his steps and comes thru the elevator, the defender will be blindsided by it. Colorado under Head Coach Thad Boyle have gone 79-39 over the last three years. Boyle is now in his 4th season. The Buffs are now up to number 20 in the latest poll before the start of Conference Season against Oregon State. This is a nice play out of their Ball Screen Motion as coming off the SPNR, the wing reads the defense running into the lane to set a cross screen freeing up the post for a pass down low from the top. Mark Turgeon is in his 3rd season with the Terps and led them to a 25 win season last year and an appearance in the NIT Semi-Finals This is a nice play which gives the shooter the option to read the defense and take advantage of what is given With Dez Wells, the Terps have an experienced player handling the ball with the ability to set-up the play as Coach Turgeon needs Layman is a lights out 3 pt shooter and in this play, he reads the defense jumping off the screen, quickly reacting, he cuts backdoor for a possible quick hit pass Wells makes the play work by coming back, receiving the hand-off and hitting the former Michigan State big man Smotrycz for an open 3 See More

Game winning play drawn up by Philadelphia 76er's in their win over the Brooklyn Nets. Evan Turner was the 2 in this situation. 5's man has to be careful to not get too close to 5 as 5 pops to the elbow, or 5 could back cut to the basket. Giving a cushion allows the ball to be inbounded. 4-2 screen is tough to switch, as is 5-2 dribble hand off. See More

This past week while in Louisville for the King of the Bluegrass we were fortunate to watch NCAA Division 2 powerhouse Bellarmine University practice before taking off a few days for Christmas. Their practice was very impressive. The amount of energy and communication throughout the entire practice is exactly what our team needed to witness. This shooting drill is one they opened up practice with and allowed to get up a ton of shots in a short amount of period. The drill incorporates the 3 main spots on the floor (top of key and each corner) and 3 different shots at each spot. The line under the rim passes to the "spot" and then closes out to the ball, the player receives the pass and shot fakes before making a 1 or 2 dribble attack before passing to the 3rd spot. After passing (or shooting) follow your pass (shot) to the next line so each player performs each shot type at all 3 spots. I believe the goal of the drill was to score somewhere around 155 points; 3pt=3, 15 ft=2, lay-ups=1. Below are the shots that each player must perform at each spot: Corner 1 3 pointer Catch & rip 15 footer Catch & rip and finish at the rim/floater Top of the Key 3 pointer Catch & rip step-back 15 footer Catch & rip finish at the rim with a power lay-up / up and under Corner 2 3 pointer Catch & rip 15 footer Catch & rip and finish at the rim/floater Special thank you to Scott Davenport for allowing us to watch his practice. The Lady Blue Devils of Duke have a veteran team back this year in the ACC led by Tricia Liston & Haley Peters. This play is a dribble entry action designed to get a quick post-up action for the 5 or get the best shooter free off the double staggered screen. Joanne P. McCallie is in her seventh season at Duke and has won three ACC Coach of the Year Awards during that time. Coach P has guided the Blue Devils to a 174-35 overall record, a 77-13 mark in ACC action and six NCAA Tournament selections, including a No. 1 seed in 2009 and four straight Elite Eight appearances. The Lady Blue Devils are currently 12- 1 overall their only loss coming to the UCONN Lady Huskies. See More
