About This Play/Drill

One of the great perks of working here at Fast Model is that we get to speak on a regular basis with the best and brightest coaching minds in the NBA and NCAA.

Today, we asked our good friend, Mike Bowden, from the University of Maryland Women's Basketball coaching staff, for a play directly from their FastDraw playbook

MarylandVideo.gifThe Maryland women's program is one of the most accomplished programs in the country, and Head Coach, Brenda Frese, has built a program based on "More than just Basketball".

The Maryland Women hold Family, Academics, Community, Travel, and the commitment to become Champions in everything they do, as sacred ideas that factor into their success both on and off the court.

Just a few of the on-court successes they have achieved recently include:

  • 2006 National Championship
  • 4 Final Four Appearances
  • 11 Elite Eight Appearances
  • 12 Sweet Sixteens
  • 9 ACC Championships (ACC Record)
  • 23 National Tournament Appearances

Today's FastDraw Play of the Day uses several actions to isolate your star player, and gives that player freedom to create a 1-on-1 shot, or find a teammate open for a shot based on their movement away from the ball.

  • 1 enters the ball to the 4, then cuts through the lane to the basket. 5 dives to the ball side block.

  • 4 passes to 3 at the top of the key. 2, 4, and 5 set up the option screens for 1 (Floppy).

  • 1 starts to one side, then can go back off the other if it looks better. If 1 isn't open, 2 shapes up and receives the pass around the elbow.

  • 2 now has a clear out for 1-on-1 action at the elbow.

  • If 2 doesn't have a scoring option, 3 dives and joins 5 to set a double flex screen for 4.
