About This Play/Drill

Today's FastDraw Play of the Day takes you to Eurobasket 2011 in Lithuania, for a look at the defensive side of the ball. In Second Round action today, France needed a defensive stop against Turkey to seal the victory. Turkey had the ball out of bounds, down 3 points, with 5 seconds to play in the game, but failed to inbound the ball within the 5-second time limit to do so, and France hung on to win the game.

Every coach at one time or another is in a position where their team needs to force a 5-second call to have a chance to win the game. Usually, it occurs when trailing, and rarely does the team pull it off under pressure. In this case France used it to clinch victory in a game they were leading.

The video below show you exactly how this play described above unfolded and allowed France to walk away with a Eurobasket victory:

This diagram utilizes features in FastDraw that allow you to customize your plays to include colors, shaded areas and even add text directly to the court. We also use custom text to show the initials of the French players and the position numbers of the Turkish players. For clarity's sake, the French players and their movements are diagrammed in blue and the Turkish Players and movements are diagrammed in red.

  • In the initial alignment, Nicolas Batun (NB) is guarding the ball and protecting the sideline pass. Tony Parker (TP) and Nando De Colo (NDC) are guarding the ball handlers and are playing between their man and the ball. Boris Diaw (BD) and Florent Pietrus (FP) are guarding screeners and playing below their men.

  • Turkey wants the ball to go to Player 1 (their Point Guard). The first action run by Turkey is to have 1 set a screen on FP. TP and FP switch this screen.

  • Next, 1 gets a screen from 5 which is supposed to free 1, but FP and BD also switch this and he is not open.

  • At this point 1 is being guarded by BD and NB is still preventing the sideline pass, so 1 has no chance of getting the ball (as shown in the shaded circle). 2 and 5 release to the top in desperation as time expires, but FP is able to deny the pass to 5 as well as block the passing lane for 2 which allows NDC to stay in the middle of the floor to prevent alob pass anywhere.
