About This Play/Drill

These are effective defensive drills to be used in pre-practice or as warmup drills. Got the idea from the New Orleans Saints a couple of years ago. They tried to replicate situations that would occur with their defense. Situations would be worked on at the beginning of practice to get the team in the mindset of thinking defense.

You can use different aspects of your defense or schemes to you need to work on for an upcoming opponent. Take a 10 minute segment to start practice each day or a couple days a week and you will notice improved intensity on the defensive end of the floor.

  • Offense starts with the ball on the wing or on the baseline. Defense starts on the opposite side of the lane. On the dribble they must get to the other side of the lane and take the charge outside the lane.
  • Must teach your players to have quick feet and quick eyes. Their eyes must be anticipating the drive. We call the charge a "game changer". It changes the game. A foul on the offensive player. A turnover on the offense. One more foul toward the double bonus for our team.
