About This Play/Drill

This is a great drill to instill in your players how and when transition offense begins: with a rebound. The drill starts with 2 offense players and 3 defenders. The Coach passes to an offensive player who either (1) shoots a 3 or (2) shot fake and drive. Multiple things can be worked on just at this point. Shooting under pressure, close out, help on basket drive and offensive players attacking off dribble.

Once the defense is in control of the ball, the drill is 3 on 2 to the other end. Whichever player shoots the basketball comes back as the defender in a 2 on 1 scenario. The two remaining players "trail" the play and become the two offensive players with the next group.

  • Drill set up is 3 defenders and 2 offensive players. The drill begins when the Coach passes to an offensive player. The defense must decide who is closing out and the other two close out to help position. The offensive player can shoot the 3 or shot fake and drive.

If the offensive player uses the shot fake and drive, this is a great chance to work on: Offensively (one-dribble pullups) and Defensively (help)

For purpose of the drill, the offensive player who catches the pass must take a shot. Here the pass goes to 1 and he shoots

  • Here 1 gets the rebound and starts the 3 on 2 fastbreak. We use the player that shoots is getting back for the 2 on 1. Here 1 passes to 2 for the shot

  • 2 gets back on defense and 2 and 1 go in the 2on1 scenario

  • 2 and 3 sprint down, The Coach passes to one of them and the drill continues.
